Cultivating a Positive Mindset:

Did you know the average person has an estimated 70,000 thoughts per day?  That’s almost 3000 thoughts per hour.  It’s like a stream of chatter endlessly begging for your attention.

And the impact of your thoughts can’t be underestimated.  They affect how you live, how you view the world and how others perceive you.

We all know that positive thoughts boost mood and generate even more positivity and pessimistic thoughts create a domino effect of negativity.  So, how do we let go of negative mental chatter and spend more time in a positive frame of mind?

In a word, Practice.

Here are some tips to get you started:

1.Release and Replace Negative Self Talk

When you hear negative self-talk, say “release,” and “replace”, then take a deep breath and think of a supportive comment you can use to replace the negative thought.

2. Let Go of the Need to Be Right

Next time you catch yourself in conflict, look at the situation through the lens of pure curiosity.  It immediately allows you to release judgement and open up to the experience in a neutral way.

3. Avoid Comparisons

When you start to make comparisons, take a deep breath and see if you are coming from a place of lack, or abundance. While it’s useful to be inspired by other people and their accomplishments, it’s important to distinguish between admiration and comparative self-judgement.

4. Practice Gratitude

If you feel a sense of lack or become overwhelmed with a barrage of negative thoughts, shift your attention to focus on what you do have or what is good in your life. It can help to keep a gratitude journal and write down three things you’re grateful for at the start or end of each day.

 5. Enjoy Quiet Time- Daily

Take at least 10 minutes a day to reflect, meditate, or simply enjoy silence by yourself. Find a soothing space to relax your mind and let physical tension melt away.

 6. Practice Random Acts of Kindness

Uplift someone else by doing something kind without expecting anything in return and notice how it impacts your mood and energy levels.

 7. Be Open to New Experiences

Change is scary, yet crucial to self-evolution so try not to resist it. Next time an opportunity comes along that takes you out of your comfort, instead of shying away, say yes and lean in to the experience.

 8. Make Different Choices

If you want different results, do things differently. When you put in the effort to make small changes consistently, they can add up in major ways and have the potential to transform your life.
